GHK-Cu: Research Overview

A naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide studied in preclinical models for skin regeneration, tissue repair, and anti-aging — widely used in cosmetics, but lacking human clinical efficacy trials for most claims.

What is GHK-Cu?

GHK is a naturally occurring tripeptide (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine) that binds copper; "GHK-Cu" is its copper complex. Endogenous GHK levels decline with age — from roughly 200 ng/ml around age 20 to about 80 ng/ml by 60. [Dou 2020] It is one of the most-studied "copper peptides" and a common cosmetic ingredient, though the systemic and therapeutic research is overwhelmingly preclinical and it is not an approved drug.

What the research has investigated

Skin & gene regulation

Reviews describe GHK stimulating collagen synthesis and tissue repair, and report that in cell studies it can up- or down-regulate thousands of human genes. [Pickart 2018; Pickart 2015]

Anti-aging & antioxidant activity

In cell and animal models GHK shows antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, with preliminary reports of partially reversing cognitive impairment in aging mice. [Dou 2020]

Anti-wrinkle — and an honest gap

A 2025 review finds cellular support for anti-wrinkle effects but notes a "surprising absence of clinical studies" validating efficacy in humans. [Mortazavi 2025]

Fibrosis & skeletal muscle

In mouse models, GHK-Cu reduced lung inflammation and fibrosis in silicosis (with no significant systemic toxicity reported) [Bian 2024], and restored cigarette-smoke-induced skeletal-muscle dysfunction via a SIRT1 pathway, with lower plasma GHK observed in COPD patients (n=20). [Deng 2023]

The state of the evidence

GHK-Cu has broad preclinical support and is widely used as a cosmetic ingredient, but human clinical efficacy trials are largely absent for its therapeutic claims. [Mortazavi 2025]

For research use only

LUMEN BASED supplies GHK-Cu strictly for laboratory and research use. It is not a drug, supplement, or therapeutic product, is not intended for human or veterinary use, and nothing on this page is medical advice or a claim of clinical benefit. Verify the batch you're studying

Each GHK-Cu lot ships with a third-party Certificate of Analysis (HPLC, mass spectrometry, identity confirmation). Pair the batch in your study with the matching COA before publishing or reporting results.
